Merging rows or column is a bad idea because it causes all types of Complications. One of the MVP's here, favorite expression is 'they are the devils spawn!' If,and only if, the cells contain just text might not cause problems ( I said might). One thing that will happen if you go to sort anything you will have major issues. However, if your bent doing it - instead of selecting just two rows select all the rows (or Columns) you want to Merge and do the merge. Remember if you run into problems. I heartily concur with what Phillip stated regarding the widely shared opinion that merging cells should be avoided. What he went on to suggest from his 3rd paragraph on, however, will do nothing to accomplish what you described wanting to do. The direct answer to your question [as I understand it] is No, you cannot convert 3 Rows into 2. Or 5 into 3, etc. Nor can you merge 3 cells then split them into 2. When you merge cells, all selected cells are merged to become one single cell. Unfortunately, I really can't conceive of any reason why anyone might even ask the question:-), so I'm not sure what alternative to suggest. Based on what I would expect the result to produce if it could be done, it seems that simply adjusting Row Height &/or Column Width should do the job. Without any details about the content or purpose of the project my only other suggestion would be to consider using Table in Word. There is far more layout flexibility because you aren't messing with the design structure on which the documents are based.
